Laura Linney at The Big C
Laura Linney was born in New York City on February 5, 1964, into a theatre family. Her father is the prominent playwright Romulus Linney. Although she did not live in her father’s house (her parents having divorced when she was an infant), Linney’s world revolved, in part, around his profession from the earliest age. She graduated from Brown University in 1986 and studied acting at Julliard and the Arts Theatre School in Moscow and, thereafter, embarked on a career on the Broadway stage receiving favorable notices for her work in such plays as “Hedda Gabler” and “Six Degrees of Separation.
Laura Linney gives an expectedly strong performance, and the supporting cast members of the pilot episode each contribute well to the show.
However, while the show is superior to much of what is on offer on television, it is a touch difficult to become absorbed in it, which is surprising given the empathetic potential of the subject matter.
Equally, despite Laura Linney’s likeable performance, the character of Cathy is slightly difficult to understand. While audiences can safely assume that her fluctuating behavior is connected to her recent life-changing news, it is unnerving to be asked to fully comprehend a character who has lost more sleep due to there being a stain on the sofa, rather than having lost sleep due to her husband’s immaturity.
Also, unless the character begins to strike a happy medium between her former overly kindly self and her recently almost obnoxious self, the character of Cathy will become an unsympathetic cookie-cutter female character.
Yet, overall, The Big C is worth a chance, and Showtime has made it possible to view the pilot episode on You Tube prior to the official debut of the series.
